The Lord Mayor of Bradford Coun Abid Hussain is giving a civic send off to athletes and coaches taking part in the Special Olympic Games in Sheffield.
Around 70 athletes and coaches will be waved off by the Lord Mayor from the Cedar Court Hotel on Monday 7 August at 10.30am. The Special Olympic Games gives athletes with an intellectual (learning) disability the opportunity to achieve and to demonstrate their sporting prowess.
Around 2,600 athletes from across England, Scotland and Wales come together to compete in a variety of sports. Athletes from the Bradford district will contend for medals in sports including swimming, athletics, equestrian events, bowls and cycling. The Special Olympics take place over four days at the home of Sheffield United Football Club, Bramall Lane Stadium.
Over 5,000 family members and friends are expected to take to the stands to cheer the athletes on.
